Allusions:

  • This sketch is a parody of the Calvin and Hobbes comic strips.
  • Earlier in the skit, Hobbes mentions the cigarette company Marlboro.

Trivia / Info:

  • This is technically the only adaptation of Calvin and Hobbes as Bill Watterson won't allow adaptations for various reasons, including fear of loss of control over his work and a dislike for other comic strips getting adapted and marketed to the point of growing stale, such as Garfield and Peanuts. While he was open to doing an animated adaptation at one point, Watterson ultimately decided against it in part because he couldn't imagine Calvin having a voice, and because he feared that it would force him to provide a definitive answer regarding whether Hobbes was real or imaginary (which he deliberately refused to do in the strip). He even turned down talks with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg because he was that committed to his characters staying as they were.
  • The shock therapy scene may be alluded from the film A Beautiful Mind.
  • Hobbes refers to Calvin by name in this skit - something he did not do very often in the strip.
  • Inside the house is a picture of Calvin, which looked the way the character appeared in the strip.
  • This is one of Calvin and Hobbes's very few appearances in animated media. This is because the cartoonist Bill Watterson has always opposed Calvin and Hobbes being adapted into animation or merchandise (though he was reported to have actually found this segment pretty funny, due to it being an unofficial parody).

Goofs / Nitpicks:

  • In the comic strips, Calvin did not receive Hobbes as a present; he caught him in a tiger trap.
  • Since Hobbes was a stuffed animal, Calvin most likely killed his parents, but between a tiger and a 6-year old boy, only a tiger would be strong enough to operate a chainsaw.
