Speed Racer is the title of the 1960s English adaptation of the Japanese anime and manga "Mach Go Go Go (マッハ Go Go Go, Mahha Gō Gō Gō?)", a series which centered around automobile racing. The series (Along with "Astro Boy" and "Gigantor".) is an early example of an anime becoming a successful franchise in the United States. The show is remembered mostly for its tendency to freeze-frame at dramatic or otherwise strange moments, and for the main character's technologically advanced racecar, the Mach 5. The series was an easy target for numerous parodies and several of the show's characters also showed up in advertising.
A live-action film based on the series is set to be released in 2008. The film will be directed by the Wachowski Brothers, better known for "The Matrix" series of films.
